Japanese Is Impossible

Japanese is impossible. At least, that is how it feels to the fictional learner at the centre of this four-track EP.

First, kanji turns a flashcard session into a twenty-nine-stroke existential crisis. Then pitch and pronunciation send an ordinary conversation off the rails. Keigo mutates into a politeness monster, and anime-sized expectations finally meet the rather different rules of real life.

Across future bass, drum and bass, dark electro, and chiptune, electronic production collides with koto, shamisen, shakuhachi, and taiko. Every mistake gets louder, stranger, and more public — but the learner keeps going.

Because anime may have lied about the details, but not the feeling. What began with subtitles became curiosity, affection, and a place to belong.

ただいま. I'm home.

日本語は無理だ。少なくとも、この4曲のEPで悪戦苦闘する架空の学習者には、そう思える。

まず、漢字がフラッシュカード学習を29画の実存的危機へ変える。次に、ピッチと発音が、ごく普通の会話を脱線させる。敬語は礼儀正しさの怪物へ変異し、最後にはアニメ級に膨らんだ期待が、現実のコミュニケーションと正面衝突する。

フューチャーベース、ドラムンベース、ダークエレクトロ、チップチューン。そのエレクトロニックな音像へ、箏、三味線、尺八、太鼓が飛び込む。失敗は曲を追うごとに大きく、奇妙に、そして人前へさらされていく。それでも、学習者は先へ進む。

アニメが嘘をついていたのは、細部だけだった。そこから生まれた気持ちは本物だった。字幕から始まったものは、好奇心になり、愛着になり、やがて心の居場所になった。
